08 Sep 10 Essential Checks for Healthy Ageing at Home
Because staying well means staying one step ahead.
Many health issues in later life show no obvious signs. That’s why regular checks are so important. They help catch problems early, manage long-term conditions, and support a better quality of life.
Here are 10 key checks every older adult should include for successful healthy ageing.
1. Blood Pressure
High blood pressure often has no symptoms but increases your risk of stroke and heart disease. Check every 6 months with a home monitor makes tracking easy.
2. Blood Sugar
Diabetes can damage nerves, eyes, and kidneys if unmanaged. Get a fasting glucose test annually. Ask your GP about your HbA1c for a longer-term view.
3. Vision
Poor eyesight raises fall risk and reduces independence. See an optometrist every year even if your glasses still seem fine.
4. Hearing
Hearing loss can lead to isolation and cognitive decline. Get tested every 1–2 years. If others say the TV is too loud, take it as a cue.
5. Bone Density (DEXA Scan)
Osteoporosis is a “silent” condition until a fracture occurs. Women over 65 and men over 70 should be screened. Earlier checks if you’re at higher risk.

6. Cholesterol & Heart Health
High cholesterol has no warning signs. A simple blood test every 1–3 years can protect your heart more often if you have risk factors.
7. Cognitive Function
Occasional forgetfulness is normal. But ongoing confusion or language changes may signal dementia. Early screening helps. Talk to your GP.
8. Dental Health
Gum disease is linked to heart disease and pneumonia. See your dentist at least once a year. Dry mouth or loose dentures need attention.
9. Cancer Screenings
Early detection saves lives. Stay up to date with NHS programmes: bowel, breast, cervical, and prostate checks — based on age and risk.
10. Mobility & Balance
Your ability to walk safely and climb stairs is key to independence. A physio or GP can assess your strength and fall risk. Small changes make a big difference.
Make Healthy Ageing a Priority
Healthy ageing isn’t about waiting, it’s all about acting. These checks aren’t about fear. They’re about confidence, control, and peace of mind.
You don’t need to do everything at once. Start with one appointment. One test. One conversation with your GP.
Small steps today build a stronger, more independent tomorrow.
